Analysis
Invoker has the reputation of being the hardest hero in Dota 2, and the numbers on this page do not really support it.
The design certainly earns the reputation. Where most heroes have three situational spells and an ultimate, Invoker has a grammar. Three reagent orbs — Quas, Wex and Exort — are levelled and arranged in any combination of three instances, and Invoke converts whichever arrangement is currently held into one of ten spells. Only two invoked spells can be carried at a time, so every cast is preceded by a decision about what to give up. Nothing else in the game asks for that much working memory under pressure.
What the bracket data shows is a win rate climbing about two points from Herald to Divine. That is a real gradient, and it points the expected way, but it is modest. Enigma, Elder Titan, Shadow Demon and Pugna all climb harder across the same brackets, and none of them carries Invoker’s reputation for difficulty. Read the other direction and Bristleback falls by more than eight points, which is a far stronger signal than anything Invoker produces.
The honest reading is that Invoker is hard to play well but not especially punishing to play badly. A mispositioned Sun Strike costs you a cooldown; a mistimed Bristleback charge costs your team the fight. Difficulty and skill-sensitivity turn out to be different axes, and conflating them is how the hero acquired a reputation its win rate does not match.
Two caveats worth holding. Win rate by bracket is confounded — the players who pick a hero in Herald are not a random sample of Herald, and a hero with a reputation for difficulty self-selects for players who have studied it. And the Immortal bracket is absent from the table below rather than zero: the sample there was too small to state honestly, so it is not shown.
If you are picking Invoker to climb, this data is neither the argument for nor against that most people expect. It is mostly an argument that the hero is more forgiving than its reputation.
